2001 Dodge Grand Caravan Timing Cover Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Timing Cover on 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan?
A: Before proceeding, detach the negative cable from the battery and drain the cooling system. Hoist the vehicle up and let the oil drain out of the engine. Start by taking the right wheel off along with its inner splash shield and next remove the oil pan and oil pick-up tube. Wondering why removal is needed. Because if your engine has an oil cooler, the timing chain cover housing or water pump inlet tube also needs the accessory drive belt, A/C compressor, crankshaft vibration damper, radiator lower hose and heater hose removed from them. Take off the right engine mount, vacate the idler pulley from the engine mount bracket, remove the engine mount and the cam sensor from the timing chain cover. For the oil filter to fit properly, remove the water pump, remove the bolt joining the power steering pump support strut to the front cover and remove the timing chain cover. Make sure the top and bottom surfaces of the chain case cover and block don't have any burrs and that you remove the self-locking seal from the crankshaft. Fit the new gasket to the timing cover so that the lower edge lines up at 0.5 mm past the cover's edge. First, align the oil pump drive flats with the vertical position of the crankshaft, then put the oil pump inner rotor flats to match those of the crankshaft. Attach the timing cover and tighten the bolts with the same sequence: M8 bolts at 27 Nm and M10 bolts at 54 Nm. Fit the crankshaft front oil seal, water pump and pulley and next the crankshaft vibration damper. Attach the engine mount bracket onto the engine, tightening the M8 bolts to 28 Nm and the M10 bolts to 54 Nm and then fasten the idler pulley and right side engine mount. Reattach both ends of the camshaft sensor, re-connect the heater return hose and put the radiator lower hose and A/C compressor back in place, securing the accessory drive belt once again. Start by putting in a new O-ring and tighten the attaching screw with 28 Nm torque. Set the oil pan, inner splash shield and right front wheel back onto the car. Check that the oil is at the right level in the crankcase, top off the coolant and fix the negative terminal to the battery.
