2001 Dodge Neon Wheel Bearing Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Wheel Bearing on 2001 Dodge Neon?
A: Begin the service and repair of the wheel bearing and hub by removing the steering knuckle, hub and wheel bearing as an assembly from your vehicle. Place the cycle tool, Remover, Special Tool 4150A, against one wheel mounting stud and press outward to release the stud from the hub flange while it is held in place by the notch in the bearing retainer plate. Swivel the hub to make the stud hole face away from the caliper lower rail on the steering knuckle, after that put the Package Contents-Hot are inserted, ensuring the hole threads into the caliper rail. Put the additional pieces of Bearing Splitter onto the steering knuckle and tighten the nuts casually with your hands. Make sure that the three bolts reaching the retainer plate are contacting the bearing splitter, but are not actively propping it. With Driver, Special Tool 6644-2 in place on the small end of the hub, place the steering knuckle in the arbor press while the bearing splitter helps support it. Then, work the arbor press to remove the hub from the wheel bearing and the outer bearing race will normally come free. Once you remove the splitter and all three retainer plate bolts, take the plate off the spindle. Insert the steering knuckle into the arbor press again, using press blocks to keep the bore clear and use MB-990799 to remove the bearing from the steering knuckle. Clean the empty bore of the steering knuckle and place the new wheel bearing into it in the right position. Put the receiver in the arbor and add Special Tool C-4698-2 and Driver Special Tool 5052. Push the wheel bearing all the way into place by pressing, then extract the knuckle from the press. Place the bearing retainer plate and use the three same mounting bolts from before, tightening the bolts to 28 Nm (250 inch lbs.). Slide the removed wheel mounting stud back into the hub flange, use C-4698-1 to secure the hub in the arbor press and push the stud into place. Make sure the wheel bearing is in the steering knuckle with its inner race front and up and the support Receiver providing pressure to the steering knuckle. Put the steering knuckle back in the arbor press and use the Special Tool MB-990799 to press the hub into the steering knuckle until the hub sits fully.
