2001 Dodge Ram 1500 Brake Caliper Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Effectively Service and Repair a Brake Caliper on 2001 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: To work on your brake caliper, first rinse all the parts in clean brake fluid or brake clean and afterward dry the caliper and piston thoroughly with clean, dry cloths. Since gasoline, kerosene and thinner leave harmful residues, it's best to avoid them. Look at the piston, as it's made of phenolic resin and verify it is clean and smooth; put in a replacement if the surface is cracked or scored and do not restore the scored part via sanding or polishing. Always use a caliper piston of the same material as the old one, as phenolic resin and steel do not match in pistons, seals, seal grooves, caliper bore and piston tolerances. If the bore shows only minor problems, you can lighten them with a brake hone, but if it's badly corroded, rusted, scored or if the bore gets bigger when you use the hone, the caliper must be replaced.
