  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Cigarette Lighter Power Outlet on 2001 Dodge Ram 1500?
    A: Before doing anything else, disconnect and take out the negative battery cable so the auxiliary cigarette lighter can be serviced. Lift out the knob and drop the cigar lighter element from the receptacle base or remove the cap from the cigarette lighter receptacle base. Look inside the receptacle base to see where the rectangular retaining bosses are located inside. Clamp the external snap ring pliers onto the retaining bosses, squeeze the handles to remove the bosses and gently rock the pliers to slide the receptacle base out of the mount. With the receptacle base unplugged from the instrument panel, remove the wire harness connector from the connector in the base. Take the mount out of the instrument panel. After putting the mount back in place, attach the wire harness connector to the receptacle base. Fit the splines in the base connector with the grooves in the mount, then press it down until the retaining bosses have engaged completely. After that, put back the knob and element or cap, secure the battery negative cable and your installation is complete.
