2001 Dodge Ram 1500 Drive Belt Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Install a Drive Belt Using a Spring-Loaded Automatic Tensioner on 2001 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: Every type of drive belt, with and without power steering and air conditioning, uses a spring-loaded belt tensioner that is automatic. To take out the drive belt, connect the wrench or socket to the left-hand threaded automatic tensioner bolt. Spin the tensioner in a counterclockwise direction as you stand in front of it which will relax the belt's tension. Then, take the belt off the tensioner pulley and then the other pulleys. Make sure you correctly route the accessory drive belt while using the proper size of the belt to stop the engine from overheating caused by the water pump turning the wrong way. Removing the pulley from the tensioner means the left-hand thread on its bolt must be considered. Set the drive belt over every pulley except the tensioner's, then put a socket/wrench on the tensioner pulley bolt and revolve it counterclockwise. Place the belt over the tensioner pulley, rotate the tensioner backward and then remove the wrench to check that the belt fits well on every pulley.
