2002 Dodge Ram 1500 Drive Belt Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service a Drive Belt on 2002 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: Before handling the drive belt, first take the negative battery cable off the battery connector. Rotate the tensioner until the belt reaches the stop and then both remove the belt and maneuver the tensioner into the free position. Be sure to place the belt around all the pulleys except the idler pulley, as a mistake can cause the engine to heat up because the water pump will turn backward. When the belt is routed, move the tensioner arm so it touches its stop position, then have the belt pass around the idler and get the tensioner in place on the other pulleys. As a last step, look at the belt wear indicator; the 4.7L engine should not have more than 24 mm (0.094 inches) between the tang and the housing stop. Should this reading go past the recommended range, change the serpentine accessory drive belt.
