2001 Dodge Ram 1500 Timing Chain Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Timing Chain on 2001 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: After unplugging the battery negative terminal, you must empty the cooling system before working on the timing chain. Open the cover for the timing chain and rotate the crankshaft so that the timing marks point at #1 TDC. With the camshaft sprocket attaching bolt removed, take out the entire timing chain together with the sprockets. Slide the crankshaft sprocket onto the crankshaft, place a screwdriver in the bend of the tensioner shoe until the holes align, insert a pin and then remove the screwdriver. When swapping the tensioner assembly, take out the three bolts that block the tensioner and no longer use the assembly. During installation, if the tensioner assembly is being changed, add the tensioner and fasten it with the mounting bolts, tightened to 24 Nm (210 in. lbs.). Stand the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets on the bench so that their timing marks are lined up at a precise center line between the sprocket bores and place the chain on them. Hold both sprockets and chain together and lift them over the shafts to ensure you line up the timing marks with a straight-edge if there is one needed. Put the camshaft bolt in place and tighten it to 68 Nm (50 ft. lbs), remove the tensioner pin and finally check if the timing marks are still aligned. Place the timing cover, add the coolant, connect the battery negative lead and fire up the vehicle to inspect for any leaks of oil or coolant.
