Timing chain of Dodge Ram 1500 vehicles plays the important role of coordinating the cyclic movements of the camshaft and crankshaft for correct valve timing required for the smooth engine operation. The Timing Chain is located at the front of the engine, it runs in a splash lubrication system and is mainly featured in engines with high displacement. Dodge Ram 1500 models have adopted metal timing chains since 1990s and are preferred due to their durability and less reference as compared to rubber based timing belts. Though timing chains are pretty dependable, there can be problems with the lubrication and the tensioner and chain guides, which can be identified if the car's engine sounds like a rattle box. For pushrod engines, a short throw chain drive reduces noise and wear, and the Dodge Ram 1500 is an ideal application for this.

Dodge Ram 1500 Timing Chain Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Timing Chain on Dodge Ram 1500?
    A:
First, unhook the negative cable from the battery and empty the engine's coolant to service and repair the timing chain and sprockets. Take off the covers from the cylinder heads on both sides, the radiator fan shroud and then rotate the engine until the timing mark on the crankshaft damper matches the TDC mark on the timing chain cover, making sure the camshaft sprocket "V6" marks are pointing at 12 o'clock. After that, disconnect the Power Steering Pump, remove the covers from the cylinder heads, the oil fill housing, crankshaft damper and timing chain cover. Secure and fasten one of the main chain tensioners, covering the oil pan while you do. Remove the secondary tensioners, sensor and the bolts from the camshaft sprocket, all the while holding the camshaft steel tubes with Special Tool 8428 while pulling them out. Push the idler sprocket, crank sprocket and all the tension arm and guide pieces forward to take off the two chains, followed by the primary chain tensioner. Watch for wear parts on sprockets, worn parts in the idler assembly, grooves in chain guides and the arms, as well as marks on the secondary chain tensioner piston. While installing, press the secondary chain tensioner piston into the housing and join with Special Tool 8514 lock pin. Adjust the primary chain tensioner next to the oil pump, tighten the bolts to 28 Nm, put on the right and left side arms and guides and tighten all screws to 28 Nm again. Set the secondary chains on the idler wheel so that you can see the plates and place the primary links over the timing marks. Grease the idler shaft and bushings, followed by putting all the chains, crankshaft sprocket and idler sprocket together as a group, aligning the timing marks. Carefully align the links and "V6" marking on both camshaft sprockets and add the secondary chain tensioners, tightening each bolt with 28 Nm of torque. Tensioners should be unlocked from outside in this order: remove locking pins, then tighten camshaft sprocket bolts to 122 Nm with Special Tool 6958. Turn the engine over twice so the timing marks can be seen, apply lubricant to every chain and see if the idler gear tolerances are acceptable; if not, replace the part. After that, add a sealant to the timing chain cover, crankshaft damper, cylinder head covers and access plugs before setting the oil fill housing, power steering pump and filling the engine cooling system. Only then should you reattach the negative Battery Cable.
  • Q: How to Remove and Replace a Timing Chain and Sprockets on Dodge Ram 1500?
    A:
Start by removing the battery's negative cable and letting the cooling system drain. After that, take out the right and left cylinder head covers and then the radiator fan shroud. Rotate the engine until the mark on the crankshaft damper matches the TDC mark of the timing chain cover, so the camshaft driveshaft is pointing at 12 o'clock for No. 1 TDC exhaust stroke. Unbolt the power steering pump from the front and remove the access plugs on the left and right cylinder heads to get to the chain guide bolts. To remove the right side tensioner arm fastener, first get rid of the oil fill housing and then remove the crankshaft damper, along with the timing chain cover. Before removing the secondary chain tensioners, simply collapse and secure the main chain tensioner and put something over the opening of the Oil Pan to ensure the plate behind the left secondary chain tensioner doesn't fall in. Do not rotate camshafts or crankshafts by themselves to prevent harm to your engine. Separate the bolts on both camshaft sprockets and hold onto the left camshaft tube with Camshaft Holder 8428A. Then, after rotating the camshaft all the way back a quarter turn, gently remove the left sprocket. Turn the right camshaft about 45 degrees counterclockwise to place it in a neutral position. With the bolt off the idler sprocket assembly, pull both the idler sprocket assembly and the crank sprocket and the chain will come off. Afterward, take out both pivoting arms, the chain guides and finally the primary chain tensioner.
