2001 Dodge Ram 2500 Flywheel Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Address Worn or Damaged Flywheel Teeth on 2001 Dodge Ram 2500?
A: If the teeth on the flywheel are not in good shape, the whole assembly must be replaced. If you can't use a replacement flywheel, you can put on a new ring gear on V10 and Diesel Engines using a special procedure so no damage occurs. Start by pointing out the former gear's location on the flywheel using a scriber to help you align the new gear. Using an abrasive cut-off wheel, sever the gear almost completely, finish off the removal with a cold chisel. The ring gear is normally shrunk onto the flywheel, so it must be heated before installation. All parts of the gear must be warmed evenly over an oven or a suitable enclosed device, with an oven temperature of about 375°F. Oxy/acetylene torches should not be used because they can cause a localized warming that damages the flywheel and results in uneven heating, rapid wear and damage to the replacement gear. Be sure to put on safety glasses or goggles and gloves designed for high heat when you need to handle a ring gear that is hot. Before installing heated gear, press it evenly to the frame with a shop press and press plates. After you've installed the flywheel, put it on a workbench and let it cool without using any air accessories, making sure the ring gear is completely chilled before mounting it on your engine. Do not use water or air fired from a compressor to cool the gear, since fast cooling can deform or crack it.
