2001 Dodge Ram 3500 Air Bag Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain the Passenger Air Bag on 2001 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: To service the passenger air bag, start by unplugging the battery negative cable, wait two minutes and only then you can work on the air bag. Cover your hands, face and forearms when you examine an air bag, because it can be irritating. Begin by pulling the glove box and its trim away from the panel, then remove the screws holding in the four plastic support brackets for the passenger air bag door panel outlet housing. Open the glove box, locate the passenger air bag wire connector and release it from the pigtail. Take out the two screws fixing the passenger air bag fuse and the three holding down the rear. Insert the trim stick and, with care, pull the passenger air bag door from the instrument panel to get the tabs and retained parts moving. Remove all these three components at once instead of separately. During installation, look at the slots around the air bag opening and take out any metal snap retainers that came loose. When reinstalling the air bag module, check that the metal snap retainers are fitted to the door tabs of the air bag system. Set the passenger air bag on the instrument panel, insert the tabs and retainers into the receptacles and lock them in place by pressing hard. Bolting the front and rear passenger air bag mounting brackets with tightened to 9 Nm (80 in. lbs.) and the four screws for the plastic support brackets to 2.2 Nm (20 in. lbs.). Match up the air bag pigtail wire connector with the passenger side, making sure it clicks in place, then hammer in the glove box top trim piece and insert the glove box back. It is important to not reattach the air bag battery negative cable until all air bag system tests are completed after any service.
