2001 Dodge Ram 3500 Brake Caliper Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Effectively Service and Repair a Brake Caliper on 2001 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: To start with the repair, first you should raise and secure the vehicle and after that take off the tire and wheel assembly. At the rear, use tool # C4212F to compress the disc brake caliper, take out the caliper pin bolts and banjo bolt and toss aside the copper washer. Make sure the caliper is held firmly so it doesn't damage the brake hose. Take away the disc caliper that sits on top of the brakes. Lift the vehicle from the front, remove the front tire and wheel assembly, then take out the caliper brake hose bolt, both washers and the hose. Next, remove both of the caliper mounting bolts. Flip up the top part of the caliper so it disconnects from the adapter and then get rid of the anti-rattle springs, as they are not exchangeable between the upper and lower units. While installing the caliper, put on new copper washers on the banjo, place the caliper and tighten the banjo bolt to 38 Nm (28 ft. lbs.) and the pins to 33 Nm (25 ft. lbs.). Once the base brake system is bled, set the tire and wheel on the car and drop the vehicle. During the front installation, wipe the caliper adapter and anti-rattle springs and then grease them with Mopar brake grease or Dow Corning 807. Set the anti-rattle spring on each side of the caliper, flip the caliper base over the rotor and into the adapter, then push the top of the caliper onto the adapter. Screw the bolts that mount the caliper to 33 Nm (24 ft. lbs.) and put new seal washers on the brake hose just as you attach it to the caliper with its fitting bolt tightened to 24 Nm (18 ft. lbs.). After bleeding the base brake system, set the wheel and tire assemblies in place, break loose the supports, bring down the vehicle and test the firmness of the pedal.
