2001 Dodge Ram 3500 Crankshaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Install a Crankshaft with the Engine Still Installed on 2001 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: The crankshaft is removed from a vehicle by first removing the transmission, taking off the oil pan and removing the oil pump from the rear main bearing cap. After that, pull off the vibration damper and remove the timing chain cover. Take out the caps over the rod bearings as well as the bearings and be sure to support the crankshaft before you remove the main bearing caps. After the jack is placed under the crankshaft, remove each main bearing cap and its matching bearing before dropping the crankshaft from the block. Throw away both the rear and front crankshaft oil seals. Clean the Gasket Maker and sealant from the cylinder block and rear cap mating surface before you put the Mopar Gasket Maker on. Give the seal lips of the new upper seal some oil, then place the new rear bearing oil seal with the white side at the face of the seal that will touch the engine. Put the crankshaft into the cylinder block, then oil and fit the new lower rear bearing oil seal with the white paint facing the back into the bearing cap. After putting sealant, put some gasket sealer at 5 mm on both sides of the rear main bearing cap and fasten it to the cylinder block right away, maintaining its alignment with the edges, middle dowel and bolts. Clean and oil each cap bolt, set all main bearing caps in place and alternately tighten each cap bolt to 115 Nm. Put back the oil pump, timing chain cover and vibration damper. Lay the connecting rods onto the crankshaft, put on the rod bearing caps and secure the nuts to 61 Nm. Use Mopar Silicone Rubber Adhesive Sealant on the bearing cap so it blocks the joint and ensure just a little bit seeps out. Afterward, clean off any extra sealant from the oil pan's seal groove. Now, fit the new upper seal on the front crankshaft, the new oil pan and if your transmission has been removed, fit it back on the main crankshaft.
