Dodge Ram 3500 Crankshaft Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How is a Crankshaft Installed in an Engine on Dodge Ram 3500?
    A:
To put in the crankshaft, first match up the main bearings according to Engine Block/Crankshaft Main Bearings - Standard Procedure and then lubricate and install each bearing in the respective block and cap. Put the crankshaft into the cylinder block and put the thrust washers around it. Clean and grease all the cap bolts before fitting them into the main bearing areas and tighten each alternately by turning it to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.) first, then 90°. Then, install the crossbolts with new washers/gaskets, starting with crossbolt A and torque each to 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.), operating the same on all crossbolts. Check the crankshaft end play, put the connecting rods on the crankshaft and install the rod bearing caps. After this, add the timing drive, oil pump, timing chain cover, rear main seal and retainer, windage tray/Oil Pan gasket, oil pick-up tube, oil pan and vibration damper and then you can install the engine.
  • Q: How to Safely Remove a Crankshaft on Dodge Ram 3500?
    A:
The first step to removing the crankshaft is to take off the vibration damper. Following that, remove the rear oil seal retainer and the Oil Pan. Following this, pull out the oil pump pickup and the seal in the oil pan. After that, take out the timing chain cover and remove the oil pump. Remove the timing drive as the next step. Before opening the bearing end caps, see which ones they are, then take off the caps as well as the rod bearings. Also, discover which bearing caps are the most important before taking them off and then take off each cap with its set of bearings individually. Then, pop out the thrust washers and get the crankshaft out of the block.
