2001 Dodge Ram 3500 Lash Adjuster Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Lash Adjuster on 2001 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: Before servicing or fixing the lifter/lash adjuster, remove the air cleaner and air inlet hose and then remove the cylinder head cover. After that, take the rocker assembly and push rods out of the engine and store them where you can locate their originals for later installing. With the intake manifold gone, pull away the yoke retainer and remove the aligning yokes. Slip the Hydraulic Tappet Remover/Installer Tool C-4129-A into the cylinder head, have it sit firmly in the tappet head and pull the tappet out using a twisting motion. If you're taking off every tappet, remember to keep them in order for easy reinstallation. If a bore or tappet in the cylinder block is scored, scuffed or seems to have sticking, enlarge the bore by one size and replace the tappet with an oversize part. Cleans the tappet by soaking it in solvent, rinsing it in hot water and drying it with a shop rag or compressed air. Before installation, grease the tappets and fit them into place with the push rods, so that the small hole in the tappet heads faces upward. Arrange the yokes so you can see the Arrow facing toward the camshaft, install its retainer, tighten the bolts to 23 Nm (200 in. lbs.) torque and then attach the intake manifold back in place. After that, put the push rods and rocker arms into position, then replace the cylinder head cover and the air cleaner assembly with the air inlet hose. Once the engine is on and up to operating temperature, don't let it rev past idle until every hydraulic tappet gets filled with oil.
