2001 Dodge Ram 3500 Crankshaft Seal Parts and Q&A
Q: How is the Crankshaft Seal Installed in Relation to the Rear Main Bearing Cap on 2001 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: There are two parts to the service seal and you can use the top part when the crank is both in and out, although the bottom part only installs with the bearing cap removed. First take out the crankshaft and toss out the old upper seal for the upper seal without the crankshaft. Remove the oil pan, oil pump and the rear main bearing cap, as well as the old lower oil seal and carefully take out the old upper oil seal if the crankshaft is fitted. The cylinder block's rear cap should be cleaned, debris removed from its seal groove and burrs checked at the oil hole for installation. Apply just the right amount of oil to the lips of the new upper seal. Place the white paint side of the new upper rear oil seal on the rear of the engine and secure it, then insert the crankshaft into the engine block. Rub some oil on the new lower seal lips and insert the lower rear bearing oil seal into the cap so the white paint is in the direction of the rear. Then, add a 5 mm drop of Mopar Gasket Maker to each side of the rear main bearing cap, assemble it onto the cylinder block immediately and use the cap marks, alignment dowel and bolts to get the cap back in place. Clean and coat each cap bolt in oil, put all the main bearing caps in place and use an 115 Nm wrench to rotate between each bolt. After installing the oil pump, apply the Mopar GEN II Silicone Rubber Adhesive Sealant at the bearing cap joint with the block and then immediately place the oil pan in place. On the lower seal, remove any old sealant from the mating area on the rear main cap, put in a new upper seal, rub a little oil on the lower seal lips and install the new seal in the bearing cap with the white paint facing the rear. Put 5 mm of Mopar Gasket Maker around the edge of both the upper and lower rear main bearing caps, line up the bearing caps, add the cleaned and oiled securing bolts and tighten them to 115 Nm before putting on the oil pump, depending sealant on the bearing caps and immediately installing the oil pan.
