2001 Dodge Ram 3500 Starter Motor Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Effectively Service and Repair a Starter Motor on 2001 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: When servicing or repairing the starter motor, start by removing the negative battery support wire from the battery and lifting and supporting the vehicle. Take out the mounting nut and the lock washer fastened to the mounting stud and while you do this, hold the starter motor in place and remove the upper bolt. Slide the bracket on the tubes forward if the transmission is automatic so that the starter motor mounting flange can be taken off the lower mounting stud. Move the motor towards the front of the vehicle until the front part of the starter housing goes past the case and be sure not to let the motor hang on the wiring harness as you lift it forward. Set the nose a bit lower and take out the nut that secures the battery positive cable wire harness connector eyelet to the solenoid terminal stud. Once this is done, disconnect the battery positive cable wire harness connector from the solenoid terminal connector receptacle and remove the whole starter motor. For installation, hook up the wiring harness with the starter motor and then tighten the eyelet nut to 25 Nm (221 in. lbs.); don't allow the starter motor to hang on the wiring harness. Put the starter motor onto the starter mounting flange, slide the cooler tube bracket if using an automatic transmission, insert the bolt partially, slide the lock washer into place above the bolt and then install the nut. Tighten the upper bolt until it reads 67.8 Nm (50 ft. lbs.) and tighten the lower nut the same way, then drop the vehicle and reconnect the battery.
