2001 Dodge Ram 3500 Van Brake Caliper Parts and Q&A
Q: How to service and repair a brake caliper on 2001 Dodge Ram 3500 Van?
A: If you need to work on of repair the brake caliper, use clean brake fluid to wipe the particles away and then use lint-free towels or low-pressure compressed air to clean the caliper and piston. Don't use gasoline, kerosene or thinner, because these solvents could leave residues that can damage your piston and seal. Look at the phenolic resin piston and check that it is smooth and clean, changing it out if it shows any problems; do not try to fix a scored surface by sanding or polishing. It is important to only put in pistons that are the same as the old ones when swapping them out, as the differences in pistons, sealings, their grooves, caliper diameter and piston tolerances mean the other ones will not work. A bore can be cleaned minimally with a brake hone, but if it is badly corrupt or even slightly enlarged by the procedure, a new caliper is recommended.
