2001 Dodge Ram 3500 Van Exhaust Valve Parts and Q&A
Q: How to service and repair Exhaust Valve and Intake Valve on 2001 Dodge Ram 3500 Van?
A: When servicing and fixing valves, begin by removing all dirt from them and throwing away those that have burns, warps or cracks. Wash out the valve guides by applying a dependable pressurized guide cleaner. Check the length of the valve stem; if it has worn past 0.051 mm (0.002 inch), replace it. Take the measurement for guide clearance by placing Valve Guide Sleeve Tool C-3973 on the valve stem and securing dial indicator Tool C-3339 to the head at a right angle to the stem. Join the valve to the indicator and back, so the display remains at or below 0.432 mm (0.017 inch). Ream oversize valve guides with larger stems, in two steps: first, to 0.0763 mm (0.003 inch) and later to 0.381 mm (0.015 inch). For the seats and faces of both the intake and exhaust valves, measure them at 44-1/4 degrees to 44-3/4degrees and 43-1/4degrees to 43-3/4degrees respectively. Valves with a margin of less than 1.190 mm (0.047 inch) after refacing should be replaced. The correct size valve guide pilot should be used when reseating stones during valve seat refacing. Square the valve seat using a dial indicator to check that runout does not go over 0.051 mm (0.002 inch). Prussian blue allows you to check if valve contact is good; if the blue transfers there, the contact suits what is needed. Move the valve seat according to where the indicator moves on the blue markings. The design of peak-to-peak valves calls for intakes to be 1.016 - 1.524 mm (0.040 - 0.060 inch) and exhausts to be 1.524 - 2.032 mm (0.060 - 0.080 inch) wide. Whenever removing a valve spring, use the tool to test it. Set the Universal Valve Spring Tester Tool at 1-5/16 in., set the spring over the stud and work the torque wrench until a ping indicates it's correct. Twice the reading will be the spring load at test length, so discard springs that fail the requirements.
