Before performing any service on the lifter or lash adjuster, carefully place the cylinder head cover(s) and rocker arm(s) aside and write down the position of lash adjusters and rocker arms if they might be used again. After that, pull out the lash adjuster(s). During installation, the hydraulic lash adjuster should have at least a partial amount of oil inside which you can tell by a short travel of the plunger when you depress it. Afterward, install the rocker arm(s) and then put on the cylinder head covers.
