Q: How to Service and Repair a Shock Absorber on 2001 Dodge Stratus?
A: Before making any repairs, first get to the nuts connecting the rear shock assembly to the vehicle by opening the trunk. Push the carpet back on top of the shock tower, take off the spring dummy bolt cover and remove the nuts above and below where the upper shock mount is attached to the shock tower. Place the car on jackstands or a frame contact hoist and take out the rear wheel and tire assembly. Unscrew the fasteners holding the splash shield to the top of the shock and then remove the bolt holding the shock to the knuckle in the rear. Use your hand to press the rear suspension down and pull the shock absorber off the rear support arm. Once it is free, tilt the top of the shock outward and simply pull the shock assembly out of the wheel well opening at the top. When disassembling, first use the W-7200 strut spring compressor from the Pentastar Service Equipment kit, leaving the rod nut in place, to compress the coil. If you service both shocks together, marker the coil spring and shock unit assembly. Please the design the Gearbox, pressurize the Spring and keep the shaft with Snap-On A136 when removing the locking nut. Access the upper shock rod bushing retainer washer, followed by the upper shock mount, rod isolator bushings, upper coil spring isolator, the lower shock rod bushing washer, dust shield and cup. Loose the grip on the coil spring and get rid of the shock absorber, the lower spring isolator, the jounce bumper and collar. Check everything for damage and change it if damaged. For installing the coil spring, put the bottom end into the compressor, squeeze it and reattach the shock absorber and the upper mount. Put in the lower shock rod isolator bushing, upper shock rod isolator bushing and sleeve, lower coil spring isolator, jounce bumper, collar, dust shield and retainer washer. Use a crow foot wrench to tighten the retainer nut onto the shock assembly to 55 Nm (40 ft. lbs.). Place the upper shock mount over the bolt hole on the shock absorber lower bracket, lower the coil spring tension and lift the shock assembly off the compressor. Replace the shock assembly inside the vehicle, fixing the upper mount in the back shock tower and secure the bracket for the shock absorber to the rear knuckle, applying 95 Nm (70 ft. lbs.) to the bolt. Open the trunk, fix the two shock assembly upper mounting nuts with 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.) torque, place the plastic cover and carpeting, replace all the shield fasteners on the splash area and the wheel and tire assembly and finally double-check that all wheel nuts are torqued to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.) before you lower the vehicle back to the ground.
