Q: How to Service and Repair a Rear Shock Absorber Assembly on 2002 Dodge Stratus?
A: To work on or repair the rear shock, enter the trunk, raise the carpet on top of the shock tower and remove the plastic that blocks the upper mount attaching nuts. With the two upper mount nuts removed and the vehicle lifted on jacks, wheel off your rear tire and its assembly from the car. First, unscrew the two fasteners that join the splash shield to the upper mount. After that, undo the bolt attaching the shock to the rear knuckle. Press on the rear of the suspension to detach the shock absorber from the knuckle, lower the shock group and tip it upward to slide it out the top of the wheel opening. If you are removing the coil spring, use the shock rod spring hold down for Compressors Pentastar Service Equipment tool W-7200 first, as compressing it will keep the nut from being removed. If you're taking care of both shocks together, mark the coil spring and shock assembly, install the shock assembly, compress the coil spring and keep holding the shock rod with Snap-On A136 socket as you unscrew the retainer nut. Take out the upper shock mount as well as the isolator bushings, along with any more pieces and check for any damage-if found, replace them. Before taking it out of the compressor, loosen the tension first if you are servicing the coil spring. Assemble the compressor by putting the coil spring's low end inside, squeezing it and attaching the shock absorber and its upper mount with the isolator bushings facing the correct direction. Fit the jounce bumper, collar and parts one by one, narrowing down the distance using a torque wrench to 55 Nm (40 ft. lbs.) as you grip the shock rod. Put the upper shock mount in position over the lower bracket bolt, let go of the spring tension and fit the shock back into place by reversing how you removed it in the first place. Install the upper shock mount, bolt on the clevis bracket to the rear knuckle and tighten the bolt to 95 Nm (70 ft. lbs.). Finish by putting in the upper mounting nuts to 54 Nm, closing the door with the plastic shield, fitting the carpet, bolting the splash shield fasteners and fitting the wheel and tire, torquing each of these to 135 Nm before setting the vehicle down.
