2001 Jeep Cherokee Crankshaft Seal Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Crankshaft Seal with the Timing Case Cover Installed on 2001 Jeep Cherokee?
A: If you're repairing or replacing the front crankshaft seal with the timing case cover on, start by unhooking the negative wire on the battery, then take off the serpentine drive belt, vibration damper and radiator shroud. Removing the oil seal, always make sure the area in which it sits is clean. When installing, put the oil seal on Timing Case Cover Alignment and Seal Installation Tool 6139, open end facing inward and coat the seal with some Perfect Seal or another oily lubricant on the outer edge. Give the crankshaft a coating of engine oil as well. Then, put the tool in place and seal over the crankshaft end, use the Seal Installation Tool 6139 to put in a draw screw and tighten it against the cover. Once you have removed the tools, sprinkle a very thin film of engine oil onto the seal's hub contact surface where the damper vibrates. Brush Silicone Rubber Mopar Adhesive Sealant on the keyway, place the key in the crankshaft and then mount the vibration damper, leaving the key in. After that, put the serpentine belt, radiator shroud and negative battery cable in place.
