2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Belt Tensioner Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service a Belt Tensioner on 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: First, get rid of the accessory drive belt and then unfasten the drive belt tensioner from the support bracket. Remember, the high spring tension means the automatic tensioner should be serviced in one piece without taking it apart. Ensure the two dowels on the tensioner are aligned with the bracket, then slide the assembly into the mounting bracket and hand turn the bolt to start it before applying 28 Nm (250 in. lbs.) of torque, paying attention to torque on the coil mounting bolts to stop them from damaging the coil case. With everything in place, put on the drive belt and see that the indexing marks line up.
