2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Oil Pan Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix an Oil Pan on 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Before working on the oil pan, release the negative cable from the battery and lift the car. Empty the engine oil by taking out the oil pan plug, next take off the exhaust pipe at the manifold and at the catalytic converter hanger to drop it down. Take out the starter motor, engine flywheel and access cover for the transmission torque converter housing. If the vehicle has an oil level sensor, take it out. Slide a piece of wood (2 x 2) between the jack stand and the engine vibration damper, then remove the bolts securing the engine mount. With the jack stand, raise the engine enough to allow you to take out the oil pan without problems. Loosen and remove the transmission oil cooling lines and oxygen sensor wiring supports under the oil pan's studs, next remove the bolts and studs holding the oil pan in place, then gently slide the pan and gasket backward to avoid hurting the oil level sensor. When putting in, clean the gasket surface of the block and pan, make four alignment dowels out of 1 1/2 x 1/4 inch bolts and set two dowels in each of the timing case cover and cylinder block. Add a layer of Mopar Silicone Rubber Adhesive Sealant at the cylinder block to each corner of the rear main bearing cap and at the joint between the block and the front cover. Slide the gasket over the dowels up onto the block and cover of the timing case. Drop the oil pan onto the gasket and over the dowels, making sure the sensor is not broken. Put in the 1/4 inch bolts for the oil pan and tighten them to 9.5 Nm (84 in. lbs.). Afterward, tighten the 5/16 inch bolts to 15 Nm (132 in. lbs.). Take out the dowels and use the remaining 1/4 inch oil pan bolts, tightening them to 9.5 Nm (84 in. lbs.). Set the engine in place, insert the through bolts and tighten all nuts. Unmount the jack stand and the wood and once more assemble the engine flywheel and transmission torque converter housing access cover and the starter motor. Restore the connection between the exhaust pipe, hanger and the engine exhaust manifold and add back any transmission oil lines and oxygen sensor wiring support. Screw in the oil pan drain plug and tighten to 34 Nm (25 ft. lbs.), raise the vehicle, reattach the negative battery lead and add oil to the oil pan to the specified mark. Caution, because it could cause injuries if you touch anything along the fan or blade.
