2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Oil Pan Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair an Oil Pan on 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Before you start any part of the service or repair on the oil pan, unhook the negative cable from the battery and lift the vehicle. Unplug the drain plug in the oil pan and separate the exhaust pipe from the manifold, plus the exhaust hanger at the catalytic converter to remove it. Don't forget to remove the starter motor, the engine flywheel and the access cover for the torque converter housing. If there's an oil level sensor installed, remove it from its place. Put a jack stand below the vibration damper, using a piece of 2 x 2 wood as a buffer between them, then undo the bolts holding the engine mount and use the jack stand to lift the engine so it's easy to remove the oil pan. Take off the transmission oil cooling lines along with the oxygen sensor wiring supports from the oil pan studs. Then, remove the bolts holding the oil pan which allows moving it away from the oil level senses to the rear without scratching. For installation, remove debris from the joint area between the block and pan gasket, make four alignment dowels out of 1 1/2 x 1/4 inch bolts and set two dowels in the timing case cover and two in the block. Put some Mopar Silicone Rubber Adhesive Sealant on the rear main bearing cap corners and the block to front cover joints, then slide the gasket over the dowels onto the block and timing case cover afterward. Hold the oil pan in position above the dowels and the gasket, minding the oil level sensor in case it is added. Start by bolting in the 1/4 inch oil pan screws and tightening them to 9.5 Nm (84 in. lbs.). Then put in the 5/16 inch screws and tighten them to 15 Nm (132 in. lbs.). Take out the temporary dowels, install the last 1/4 inch oil pan bolts and tighten them to 84 in. lbs. Place the engine onto the engine mounts, fit the through bolts and tighten them at the nut ends. Take out the jack stand and wood and attach the engine flywheel and the torque converter housing access cover. After that, you can install the starter motor. Connect the exhaust pipe to the relevent hanger and engine exhaust manifold and make sure to attach all transmission oil cooling lines and wiring supports for the oxygen sensors. After fitting the drain plug, tighten it until it reaches 34 Nm (25 ft. lbs.). Raise the vehicle, regi During engine use, stay far from the fan and pullies, keep your hands away from belts and never stand in the engine's way. After that, start the engine and check for any leaks.
