2001 Jeep Wrangler Oil Filter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Properly Service an Oil Filter on 2001 Jeep Wrangler?
A: Get a filter with SAE threads for oil service, since using a filter with metric screws may result in oil leaks and failure of your engine. Put a drain pan underneath the oil filter in the beginning. Choose a suitable wrench for your oil filter and turn it counterclockwise to loosen the filter in the cylinder block oil filter boss or filter adapter housing. If the filter separates from the adapter nipple, first tip the gasket end upward to prevent much oil from leaking before removing the filter from the car. Don't forget to remove the used gasket along with the oil filter and then use a cloth to wipe the gasket opening area on the engine to clean it. Grease the oil filter gasket with a little engine oil and attach it to the adapter nipple by hand. Once the gasket touches the sealing area, hand tighten the filter until it's snug but no more. After that, pour in oil, confirm there is enough in the crankcase, start the vehicle and check for any oil leaks.
