2001 Jeep Wrangler Rocker Arm Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Rocker Arm on 2001 Jeep Wrangler?
A: When repairing or servicing the rocker arm assembly, first lift off the engine cylinder head cover to check for any bridges that might disturb the valve tip area. Start by removing the capscrews at the bridges and pivot assembly, tightening each one by one turn in an opposite order to protect the bridges. Gently lift the bridges, pivots and matching pairs of rocker arms, setting them on a bench in the same way they were taken off and then remove the push rods and put them on the bench in the order they came out. Wipe all components with cleaner and apply compressed air to empty the rocker arms and push rods of oil. Check both sides of the pivot surfaces on the rocker arms and if any are scuffed, pitted, cracked or very worn, replace them. Look for deep pitting on the valve stem tip contact surface. Inspect every push rod end for wear that seems higher than usual and swap it with a new push rod when needed, always inspecting the matching hydraulic tappet for wear as well. To check, roll each push rod on a smooth surface or shine a light between the push rod and surface, observing any abnormal line on the push rod that might suggest a blockage in the engine cylinder head. Before installing, lubricate the ball ends of the push rods using Mopar Engine Oil Supplement or an equivalent and put them in their original places so that the bottom end is centered in the tappet plunger cap seat. Put a drop of Mopar Engine Oil Supplement or a similar product on the part of the rocker arm that moves near the pivot, then put the rocker arms, pivots and bridges back over each cylinder where they belong. Put the capscrews into place on each bridge so they don't squeeze the bridge, then tighten them one at a time by turning them alternately by one turn to avoid any harm, making sure they are tightened to 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.) torque. After that, reattach the cylinder head cover onto the engine.
