2001 Jeep Wrangler Piston Ring Set Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Piston Ring Set on 2001 Jeep Wrangler?
A: When working on the piston ring, start by eliminating all traces of carbon from the ring grooves, so that drain ports and pin boss of the oil ring are unobstructed, since taking out any metal could change the space between the ring and groove and damage the ring and its land. Make sure the groove areas for the piston rings are not damaged by nicks and burrs. Put a feeler gauge between the ring land and ring so it is snug which allows the ring to rotate without binding. Raise a piston so its bottom contacts the ring in the cylinder bore, then measure the gap between the ring with a feeler gauge. Oil control rings are designed the same and you can fit them facing up or down; before installing the screws, put in the side rails in the oil rail spacer without aid. Each compression ring is special and should not be exchanged; the upper compression ring with the shiny coating on the outside can be placed on the track with either side facing up, while the lower ring has a chamfer on its bottom inside edge and a dot on its top to show the right direction. Use the ring installer to put the second compression ring with the dot facing out and put the top compression ring on next, either way round. The oil spacer gap should be on the centerline of the piston skirt, the oil rail gaps must be 180° apart on the piston pin bore centerline, the No. 2 compression ring gap 180° from the top oil rail gap and the No. 1 compression ring gap 180° from the No. 2 compression ring gap.
