2002 Chrysler 300M Piston Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Install a Piston in an Engine on 2002 Chrysler 300M?
A: How to do this first is to remove the cylinder heads and the oil pan. Remove the top rings from the cylinders by using a good ridge reamer and while still covering the tops of the pistons. Each piston and connecting rod should be taken out from the top of the block, making sure the crankshaft is turned so each connecting rod is at the center of the cylinder bore. Identify each connecting rod and cap by looking at their markings and mark any that do not have labeled identification. Before moving the piston and rod assemblies, remove the cap from the connecting rod and make sure you protect the connecting rod bolts. Once the bearing is removed, put the cap back onto the mating rod. Begin installation by putting on the piston rings and then check the leading ends of the connecting rod bearing cap bolts for necking. If you find necking, change the bolts. Adjust the compression ring gaps so that the oil ring rail gap is never directly above any of them before putting the piston head and rings into clean engine oil. More the ring compressor above the piston and secure it with a designated wrench so that the ring positions are maintained. Add connecting rod bolt protectors after that and then rotate the crankshaft to place the connecting rod journal just right in the cylinder bore. Put the rod and piston into the bore, guiding the rod so the arrow on the piston points forward and the oil squirt hole is placed on the side opposite your loudest cylinder. Use the hammer handle to push the piston down as you move the connecting rod into the place on the journal. On top of each rod cap, install nuts, on carefully cleaned and lubricated rod bolts, tighten them firmly to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs) and continue with an extra 1/4 turn. After clean-up, reinsert your cylinder heads and the oil pan into the vehicle.
