2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser Clutch Slave Cylinder Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Clutch Slave Cylinder on 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Taking the clutch slave cylinder off starts with receiving the vehicle on a hoist and loosing the clutch hydraulic quick connect with tool 6638A. On 2.0 and 2.4L engine models, first remove the left lateral bending brace, then remove the nuts from the damper bracket and the bolts from the slave cylinder mount, lastly taking out the slave cylinder. Placing the slave cylinder unit into the transaxle, install the fasteners by simply pulling and turning them to start threading the nuts. Tighten the bolts connecting the slave cylinder to the transaxle to 19 Nm (168 in. lbs.) if you have a 2.0/2.4L vehicle and tighten them to 12 Nm (105 in. lbs.) if you have a 1.6L vehicle, then tighten all of the damper nuts to 24 Nm (215 in. lbs.). Link the clutch hydraulic supply tube, making sure you see and hear an audible signal and check by pulling on it. If you have a 2.0L or 2.4L model, install the left lateral bending brace, lower the car and verify that the reservoir on the clutch master cylinder is full. If it isn't, replenish it with DOT 3 brake fluid. Work the clutch pedal for no less than ten strokes to ensure any air trapped inside the system is transferred to the reservoir; if there is too much air, you'll need to bleed the clutch system. After that, make sure the clutch release system is in proper working order and that the shipping strap is broken on the new slave cylinder so pedal effort doesn't become too high.
