2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser CV Boot Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a CV Boot on 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: The first step to fixing the boot on the outer Constant Velocity Joint is to remove the halfshaft assembly from the vehicle. Do not worry about large and small clamps that retain the sealing boots on the shafts; remove them and discard them, then slide the larger sealing boot down the interconnecting shaft. Support the interconnecting shaft securely in a vise and stopper the vise with caps to keep the shaft safe. Then softly beat the housing with a hammer to free the joint from the circlip inside the housing. Takes off the large circlip from the interconnecting shaft before you remove the sealing boot. Review the outer CV joint assembly and the interconnecting joint; worn components mean that the halfshaft must be changed, as component parts cannot be serviced. To put on the boot, slide it onto the shaft above the interconnecting shaft, but make sure the raised edge goes into the grove. Be sure the splines of the interconnecting shaft are lined up with those on the outer CV joint, then move the joint onto the shaft. Reach the outer CV joint press against the circlip by gently striking the end of the stub axle with a soft-faced hammer. Put half of the grease from the seal boot service package into the outer CV joint assembly housing and the other half into the sealing boot. Join the sealing boot to the interconnecting shaft by applying pressure with crimping Special Tool C-4975-A so that the seal is not affected. Apply the clamp to the boot and use the Crimper tool to pull the boot tightly into the groove on the housing. Once the work is complete, inch the halfshaft assembly back in place on the car.
