2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser Crankshaft Seal Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service the Rear Crankshaft Seal on 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: The first thing to do to service the rear crankshaft oil seal is to take away the transaxle and flex plate. Slip the broad blade of a 3/16 flat screwdriver between the edge of the metal case and the plastic dust cap seal, not letting the blade touch the seal. Check the crankshaft for burrs or scratches, sand them with 400 grit sandpaper to make sure they're smooth and then install the new seal. You don't need to lubricate the seal directly. Line up Special Tool 6926-1 Seal Guide on the crankshaft and place the seal over the guide, making certain the seal's lip lines up with the crankcase. Push the seal into place with Special Tool 6926-2 and stop just before the tool touches the piston, to make sure the seal does not come out past flush and leak oil. After you have installed the seal, attach the flex plate to the motor with Mopar Lock & Seal Adhesive and tighten the bolts to 95 Nm (70 ft. lbs.) Take care to place the transaxle back into the assembly next.
