Q: How to Service and Repair a Front Shock Absorber on 2002 Chrysler Sebring?
A: The first step to servicing or repairing a front shock absorber is to loosen the wheel nuts, lift the vehicle and remove the wheel and tire assembly. If both shock assemblies are out, give them a right or left marker. Unhook the wheel speed sensor cable routing bracket from the steering knuckle, remove the nut from the upper ball joint stud, then pull the upper ball joint stud assembly off the knuckle using Puller, Special Tool, C-3894-A and sliding the knuckle outwards. Then, unscrew the pinch bolt joining the shock absorber to the shock absorber clevis and afterwards take out both the nut and thru-bolt attaching the clevis to the lower control arm. Lightly tap off the clevis from the shock absorber with a soft brass drift, then take out the four bolts securing the shock absorber/control arm bracket to the shock tower and take out the shock assembly from the wheel well. Before taking apart the strut assembly, use W-7200 to securely hold the coil spring as you move the spring shank mark to the appropriate position on the shank. Compress the spring to take out all tension from the top bracket, then securely hold the shock rod with Snap-On A136 to unscrew the retainer nut. You should remove the upper bushing retainer washer, lower spring isolator, jounce bumper, cup, dust boot and lower bushing retainer washer from the shock absorber. Look over all equipment for damages and change out any pieces that don't work properly. For assembly, put the upper coil spring isolator on the upper mounting bracket, paying attention to the special way the top and bottom shock absorber rod isolator bushings are positioned. First, fit the lower end of the coil spring into the spring compressor, same as before and top the spring with the upper mounting bracket. Begin by compressing the coil spring, then put on the single spring isolator at the lower end of the shock absorber, next add the jounce bumper and the collar. First, fit the dust shield and cup, then attach the shock under the coil spring, until the lower spring seat meets the spring. Put the shock absorber unit in the clamp, slide on the upper shock rod bushing retainer washer and use a torque wrench to tighten the shock assembly retainer nut to 55 Nm (40 ft. lbs.). Unwind the coil spring slowly, keeping everything in place and remove the shock assembly from the compressor. Put the shock assembly into the shock tower, line up the configuring pins and the holes on the mount and securely tighten the four bolts to a torque of 95 Nm (70 ft. lbs.). Secure the clevis to the shock absorber and ensure it is all the way down, then turn the pinch bolt to 88 Nm (65 ft. lbs.). Screw in the clevis bracket to the control arm thru-bolt temporarily, then insert the upper ball joint into the steering knuckle and attach it with a nut tightened to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.). Affix the holder for the wheel speed sensor cable and, once the vehicle is lowered by a jack stand under the lower control arm, secure the shock absorber clevis to lower control arm bushing thru-bolt nut at 88 Nm (65 ft. lbs.). After that, remove the jack stand, fit the wheel to the axle and tighten the wheel mounting nuts to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.) as you lower the vehicle.
