2002 Dodge Dakota Neutral Safety Switch Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Neutral Safety Switch on a 42RE Automatic Transmission on 2002 Dodge Dakota?
A: For the 42RE automatic transmission, first lift the vehicle and put a drain pan under the Transmission Range Sensor (TRS). Change the transmission manual lever to be in the manual LOW position which is the detent closest to you. Untie the wire harness from the TRS and take out the two screws securing it to the bracket. Lift the TRS straight out of the bracket and then unlock and remove the bracket in the transmission using Adapter 8581. To install the TRS, press the transmission manual shaft lever down to LOW, attach the TRS bracket in the transmission case and secure it with Adapter 8581 at 34 Nm (300 inch lbs.) force. Attach the TRS to the mounting bracket so the wiring connector is in front of the transmission, use the two screws to secure it at 3.4 Nm and check that the sensor is operating properly. Set the shifter knob on the driving gear into PARK, restore the signal from the TRS connector, lower the vehicle and add fluid to the correct amount as indicated by the manual.
