The Dodge Dakota Neutral Safety Switch is an electrical part of the transmission range. The Neutral Safety Switch allows the engine to crank only when the shift lever is in Park or Neutral. In any other drive gear, the engine cannot crank. The Dakota transmission, which is employed in Dodge powertrains, sends a confirming signal to the vehicle computer that the manual lever position is correct. It works by sensing the manual lever position and authorizing the starter circuit. Inside the device, the movable contacts open or close with the movement of the lever. This completes or interrupts the electrical path of the Powertrain Control Module. This simple mechanism prevents the vehicle from unwanted motion at startup and communicates gear selection to the computer so that it can set line pressure, shift timing, and torque-converter clutch action appropriate to Dakota conditions. Dodge Dakota has no specific versions, so the information applies to them all. A Dodge driver will see efficient gear recognition and commensurate safety start traits with effective Neutral Safety Switch action. If the Neutral Safety Switch is not working, you cannot start the vehicle until the Neutral Safety Switch circuit is restored.

Dodge Dakota Neutral Safety Switch Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Neutral Safety Switch on Dodge Dakota?
    A:
The Transmission Position Switch/Sensor is serviced after first removing the valve body assembly from the vehicle. Then, remove both the manual shaft seal (1) and the manual shaft/TRS retaining screw (1) using your plastic tool and take off the TRS from the manual valve shaft. To install the TRS, position its body onto the shoulder of the manual shaft so the TRS locating pin drops into the manual valve bore's slot. Fasten the TRS/manual shaft retaining screw (1) to 5 Nm (45 inch lbs.) and then put the manual shaft seal (1) in place. After that, fasten the valve body to the transmission.
