2002 Dodge Grand Caravan Speed Sensor Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain a Rear Wheel Speed Sensor on 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan?
A: Before touching the rear wheel speed sensor, lift up the vehicle and make sure you clean the pins of the electrical connectors when you remove the sensor cable; inspect the condition of the connectors as well. Take out the grommet on the floor pan and disconnect the cable going to the speed sensor. As you remove the routing clips from the rear wheel speed sensor cable, watch out not to hurt the clips, as clips attached to the brake hose require replacement. Pull the speed sensor cable from the press-in routing clips near the brake hose and tubing, remove the bolt fixing the wheel speed sensor cable metal clip to the rear of the axle and pull out the metal clip if you can. A seized speed sensor head because of corrosion requires you to use a hammer and punch instead of pliers. Unbolt the wheel speed sensor head from the axle and remove the head from its position. During installation, put wheel speed sensor cables inside retainers to guard against their touching any moving parts or becoming too long which could damage the circuit. Punch in the plastic anti-rotation pin into the bearing flange, then mount the wheel speed sensor head to the axle flange and tighten the attaching bolt to 10 Nm (90 in. lbs.). Check the distance between the wheel speed sensor face and the tone wheel's top. Make sure the clips are not harmed when inserting the speed sensor cable into the routing clips on the brake flex hose, otherwise, you'll need to change the damaged cables. Run the speed sensor cable close to the brake hose and tubing and secure it under the leaf spring with two routing clips; then, use a metal routing clip to secure the speed sensor cable, installing it onto the axle with a bolt that is tightened to 16 Nm (140 in. lbs.). Attach the cable from the wheel speed sensor securely to the wiring harness of your vehicle. Then, insert the speed sensor cable grommet into the floor pan and check that it is all the way seated, lower the car and check both the base and ABS braking systems while on the road.
