2002 Dodge Intrepid Water Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: Can the Water Pump Be Replaced Without Discharging the Air Conditioning System on 2002 Dodge Intrepid?
A: You can replace the water pump on any model without discharging the air conditioning system. Sometimes, a tiny amount of engine coolant from the weep hole will appear as a black mark at the weep passage, but if you notice a heavier leak or a continuous stream, you should suspect the shaft seal has failed. First, drain the liquid in the cooling system, then carefully remove the radiator's upper crossmember, radiator fan and accessory drive belts, as the water pump is linked to the main timing chain. After that, take out the timing chain and all its guides, next unbolt the water pump from the block and finally get rid of both the water pump and the gasket. Look for broken or cracked parts on the water pump, coolant leaking, rubbing of the impeller in the cylinder block, very loose bearings or unusual wear on the pump body; thin black marks beneath the weep hole are normal. For installation, start by cleaning away dust from where the piston rings seal, then mount the water pump and install the gasket, secure all bolts to 12 Nm (105 in. lbs.), fit on the timing chain guides and timing chain, put on the timing chain cover, crankshaft damper, radiator fan and radiator upper crossmember and finally finish by filling the cooling system.
