On all models, the water pump can be replaced without releasing the air conditioning system's coolant. A small amount of coolant from the primary weep hole is normal and will appear as a black stain near the hole, but a lot or ongoing leak of engine coolant shows the shaft seal has failed and the water pump should be replaced. Sometimes coolant flows out of the secondary weep passage and heads for the engine valley which may make the original weep hole clogged with debris. You should analyze the water pump carefully before you consider a replacement. Empty the cooling system, remove the radiator upper crossmember, fan and all
Drive Belts attached to the accessory system, because the water pump is the only attachment to the
Timing Chain. After that, disconnect the timing chain and pull out all chain guides, unscrew the bolts connecting the water pump to the engine block and lastly handle the water pump and gasket. Visually check the pump to identify any harm, cracks, coolant leaks, rubbing inside the block and improperly loose rotating bearings. During installation, make sure the water pump and gasket are installed correctly, then tighten the mounting bolts to 12 Nm (105 in. lbs.), next replace the timing chain guides, add the timing chain, fit the timing chain cover, reinstall the crankshaft damper, place accessory drive belts, mount the radiator fan and install the upper crossmember of the radiator on top, finally fill the cooling system.
