2002 Dodge Neon CV Boot Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Replace a CV Boot on 2002 Dodge Neon?
A: Start by pulling out the halfshaft assembly to change the inside constant velocity joint boot. Erase the large clamp that holds the inner tripod joint sealing boot to the tripod joint housing, splash the little clamp that clings the boot to the interconnecting shaft and take away the sealing boot from the tripod housing. Be sure to keep the rollers from falling when you remove the spider joint from the tripod joint housing. Pull out the tripod joint interconnecting shaft and spider assembly as one unit, then remove the retain ring from the end of the shaft. Should you have problems removing the spider with your hands, gently strike it with a brass drift and prevent coming into contact with the outside tripod bearings. Wear on the spider assembly, tripod joint housing and interconnecting shaft should be checked and cleaned; if the parts indicate wear, you should replace the entire halfshaft assembly, because its component parts are not replaceable. The sealing boot you install should be of the same type as the original boot: a silicone or Hytrel material for high and standard temperature, respectively. Tighten the clamp from the tripod joint onto the interconnecting shaft and then move the new sealing boot on so that the raised bead rests in the slot. While looking at the shaft, slide the spider assembly onto it with the chamfer facing the shaft and working it in until the retaining snap ring is fully installed. Take half of the service grease from the kit and put it in the tripod housing, adding the leftovers to the sealing boot. Put the tripod housing underneath the spider assembly and then slide it down onto the assembly. Observe that the interconnecting shaft seal is not pulled in from the side or stretched when fixing it with Clamp Special Tool C-4975-A. Put the sealing boot into the tripod housing retaining groove and apply the clamp in an even manner. Vent the tripod joint assembly by pushing a trim stick into the gap between the tripod joint and sealing boot, keeping it flat against the housing to protect the area. Modify the inner tripod function on the halfshaft to make sure the sealing boot edge length is correct, after which remove the trim stick. Fix the sealing boot to the tripod joint by crimping with Special Tool C-4975-A if your boot clamp is that kind or by clicking it snugly in place with a low profile latching clamp such as Snap-On YA3050. The last step is to install the halfshaft again into the vehicle.
