2003 Dodge Neon CV Boot Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Repair a CV Boot on 2003 Dodge Neon?
A: Before servicing or repairing the boot of the outer CV joint, take out the halfshaft from the vehicle. Remove both clamps, drop down the large CV joint boot and take the small outer boot out from the interconnecting shaft. Clean the area to let you see both the outer CV joint and the interconnecting shaft, then grip the interconnecting shaft in a vise, use protective caps and tap with a soft-faced hammer until the outer CV joint is loose and can be moved off the internal circlip. Clip off the large circlip on the interconnecting shaft and take off the sealing boot without it. Look for wear on the outer CV joint assembly and interconnecting joint; any wear means you'll need to replace the whole halfshaft assembly, as component parts are unserviceable. With the interconnecting shaft curved downward, fit the new boot firmly onto it, so the raised bead will fit into the groove. Place the outer CV joint assembly splines in line with those of the connecting shaft and begin to put the joint onto the shaft. Seat the outer CV joint on the interconnecting shaft with a soft-faced hammer and continue until it is up against the circlip. Spread half of the grease from the seal boot service package to the outer CV joint assembly housing and spread the other half to the sealing boot. Installing the outer CV joint sealing boot clamp in the right place, secure it with Special Tool C-4975-A and be careful not to dimple or stretch the seal. Put the sealing boot into the right place in the outer CV joint housing, insert the retaining clamp and join the two with the same tool. Next, install the halfshaft assembly again on the vehicle.
