  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Drive Belt on 2002 Dodge Neon?
    A: Removing the power steering pump belt and air conditioning compressor belt is the first step to working on the alternator/generator belt. Turn the locking nut downward to release it and lift the car with a hoist before you begin. After taking off the accessory drive belt splash shield, gently loosen both bolts holding the generator until its belt comes off. Be sure to remove any foreign material and clean away all oil, grease and coolant from the belt's grooves before you install your drive belt. Excessive wear, frayed cords or severe glazing mean you need to replace the belt; however, tiny cracks along the ribbed belt are acceptable, but not pairs of parallel cracks. During installation, put the belt on in the right path and make sure that all the lines connect. Pull the belt around the pulleys, then use the adjusting bolt to tighten the belt according to what is specified in the Drive Belt Tension Chart. Use the Drb tool together with Special Tool 8371 which helps measure belt tension, with the engine off. After connecting the 8371 to the Drb Iii, put the microphone probe 2.54 cm (1 inch) from the belt near one of the central areas, pluck it several times and tighten the belt so the best frequency appears. Screw the generator pivot bolt until you reach 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.), then reinstall the accessory drive belt splash shield, bring the vehicle down, attach the genertor and lastly, fit the power steering pump/air conditioning compressor drive belt on.
