This is a very important feature of the Dodge Neon automobiles since it act as the link between the engine and other parts namely the alternator and the A/C compressor. More often, a serpentine belt is used, which goes round these parts and connects them to the crankshaft pulley. This design helps in the transmission of power, and the parts move as they are supposed to. Drive Belts that have been used in Dodge Neon models are V-belts and multi-groove belts have been used. V-belts provide the premier traction with great endurance while multi-grooved belts allow for flexibility and efficiency to work in multiple transmission paths. Without fail it is recommended that the Drive Belts be replaced every 100000 miles while a repair is needed if the belts show signs of wear, such as fraying or cracks. Apart from that, replacement of damaged Drive Belt should be done on time as far as its damage is concerned this could pose several severe problems to the engine and other parts.

Dodge Neon Drive Belt Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Drive Belt on Dodge Neon?
    A:
Remove the Power Steering Pump and air conditioning compressor belt by turning the Belt Tensioner clockwise with a 17 mm wrench. Afterwards, release the spring tension carefully. After that, take the drive belt off the engine. First, take off the power steering pump/air conditioning compressor drive belt from the belt's center. Then, unbolt the pivot, lock and adjusting bolts to remove the generator belt. While installing, make sure every V-groove from the drive belt touches the pulley grooves and stays properly routed. Before installing the belt pulley, remove any debris, oil, grease and coolants from the grooves on the belt pulley. If any of the above symptoms such as excessive wear or torn cords, appear, change the belt, but normal minor cracks on the ribbed Poly-V belt are acceptable. Do not apply any belt dressing or restorer to Poly-V belts. While installing, lay down the drive belt over all the pulleys, just above the power steering pump pulley and tighten the tensioner to pass the drive belt around that pulley. After completing installation, see that the belt length indicator lines match the minimum and maximum belt marks and place the newly installed belt in line with the normal belt length line. For the generator belt, fit it and make sure it's tight by turning the tension bolt according to the Drive Belt Tension Chart. Check the belt tension with Special Tool 8371 Belt Tension Gauge Adapter and Drbiii while the engine is off. Link the 8371 with the Drbiii, use the microphone probe to sample the belt area about 2.54 cm away, pluck the belt three times and change the tension so the frequency matches the number in the chart. After that, tighten the pivot bolt and locking nut to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.) and place the power steering pump and A/C compressor drive belt.
  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Drive Belt on Dodge Neon?
    A:
To start, loosen the adjustment by turning the tensioner counterclockwise with a wrench and pulling the air conditioning compressor belt last since they move in opposite directions. After that, take out the belt. To install the belt, first place it over every pulley except the Power Steering Pump pulley, round the Belt Tensioner clockwise and let go of the spring. Make sure the course of the belt is correct and all the V-grooves are touching the pulley grooves. Once the belt is fitted, make sure the belt length indicator marks are within the set limits and that a new belt should line up with the belt's nominal length mark. Before you remove the generator belt, first unfasten the power steering pump or air conditioning compressor drive belt and afterward, loosen the pilot bolt, locking nut and adjusting bolt. With the installation of the new belt, tighten up the adjusting bolt according to the specifications shown in the Belt Tension Chart and then test the deflection of the belt in the central part due to space at that point. After that, put the pivot bolt together with the locking nut on tight at 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.) and attach the A/C compressor drive belt to the power steering pump again.
