2002 Dodge Ram 1500 Release Bearing Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Release Bearing on 2002 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: Before working on the clutch release bearing, it's important to remove the transmission and transfer case, if they are equipped. Disconnect the release bearing from its holder and get rid of the bearing. If the bearing slide surface on the transmission front bearing retainer is scored, worn or cracked, replace the retainer. Since the release lever and pivot stud hold the stud in place, check them to see that the stud is tight and undamaged and check the fork to see it is not bent or old, replacing the fork spring clips if they are damaged or bent. Apply Mopar high temperature bearing grease to the splines of the input shaft, the slide where the bearing retainer rests, the pivot ball stud of the lever and the pivot surface of the release lever. Attach the release fork and bearing and use spring clips to secure them; also make sure the raised area on the fork is toward the slave cylinder side of the transmission. Now, attach the clutch housing if you've removed it and then the transmission and transfer case when your vehicle has them.
