2002 Dodge Ram 1500 Shift Cable Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair the Shift Cable for a 45RFE Automatic Transmission on 2002 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: Before working on the shift cable, make sure to shift to PARK and rise the vehicle. At the lever beneath the transmission, pull the cable eyelet out and extract the cable adjuster from its mounting bracket. Lift the car seat after lowering it, remove the insulation pad covering the dash panel and remove the gearshift grommet from the dash. If necessary, take out any bits of trim around the steering column to reach the cable and the BTSI mechanism, unplug the BTSI connector from the column and disconnect the cable at its lower bracket and lever pin, pulling it into the car through the dash hole. Put the cable's transmission end into the opening in the dash panel and place the cable grommet into the panel opening. Feed the cable into the steering column bracket and push it into the retaining ears so the cable eyelet fits onto the shift lever ball stud. Raise the vehicle up again, set the transmission lever into PARK and rotate the prop shaft to confirm the car is in PARK. Slide the gearshift cable into the transmission mount, then lock it securely by pressing the little ears on the cable into the tranny bracket and linking the ball stud on the cable to the manual shift lever eyelet. Decrease your vehicle's height, push the cable adjuster downward to prevent the cable from being readjusted, operate and test the transmission range sensor and tune your shift cable and inside gear selector as needed.
