2002 Dodge Ram 1500 Thermostat Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain a Thermostat on 2002 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: To service a thermostat, make sure the cooling system is not hot and pressurized with coolant, so you don't get burned. If the old liquid is clean, put it aside to use again and find the right thermostat for the vehicle and engine. First, pull the negative battery cable, bleed the system and compressor, lift and stabilize the car and remove the splash shield. Then unclip the lower radiator hose from the housing, remove the thermostat housing bolts, lower radiator hose clamp, remove the thermostat housing and remove the thermostat. Clean inside the mating area and gently place the spring side of the thermostat into the machined groove on the timing chain cover. Place the housing on the timing-chain cover and add the bolts that attach it to the cover, tightening to 13 Nm (112 inch lbs.); make sure the thermostat is centered and tightened evenly so that the housing does not crack or get ruined. Connect the lower radiator hose to the thermostat housing, place the splash shield back in position, lower the auto, refill the cooling system, connect the negative battery lead to its position and finally start and warm the engine as you look for leaks.
