2003 Dodge Ram 1500 Thermostat Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain a Thermostat on a 3.7L/4.7L Engine on 2003 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: Cool and depressurize the system before handling the thermostat, to avoid the danger of being burned by hot, sprayed coolant. Put the old coolant in a clean container should you plan to use it again. After removing the negative battery cable, empty the cooling system and lift the car to get access beneath it. Undo the clamp and disconnect the lower radiator hose first and then unhook the lower radiator hose from the housing near the thermostat. Carefully remove the bolts holding the thermostat housing, the thermostat housing and then the thermostat. To fit the thermostat, wash the sections where the cover and the housing meet, add a thin layer of grease and descend the thermostat (with spring on the bottom) into the machined part of the timing chain cover. Set the thermostat housing in position on the timing chain cover. Mount the hous-to-chain-cover bolts, hand tightening them until they reach 13 Nm (112 in. lbs.) so that the housing is even and the thermostat is centered to avoid damages or leaks. Carefully put the lower radiator hose back onto the thermostat housing, install the splash shield once more and lower the car, then refill the cooling system, reconnect the negative battery cable and lastly, check for any leaks by starting the vehicle.
