2002 Dodge Ram 1500 Van Drive Shaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to service and repair the Drive Shaft on 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 Van?
A: Raise the vehicle with its axles level and supported and let the wheels and propeller shaft rotate. Take out any snap rings around the universal joint to ensure your inclinometer base lies flat. Turn the shaft so the transmission/transfer case bearing cap is below and use this position for all data measurements. Attach the inclinometer to the yoke bearing cap or pinion flange ring, keeping it along the length of the shaft and centering the bubble in the sight glass to get the Output Yoke Angle. After that, turn the propeller shaft 90 degrees and align the inclinometer over the yoke bearing cap, so the bubble is again in the middle. After you have these angles, find the transmission output working angle by first subtracting the smaller angle from the larger one. Rotate the propeller shaft 90 degrees next, put the bubble on the pinion yoke bearing cap so it's parallel to the shaft and place the bubble in the center to measure the angle of the input yoke shaft. The axle input operating angle is found by reducing the smaller number from the larger. Angles in U joints should not be greater than 1 degree when canceled, operating angles should be less than 3 degrees and continuous propeller shaft angles should be at least 1/2 of a degree.
