2002 Dodge Ram 3500 Alternator Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Replace an Alternator on 2002 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: Before you start, remove the negative cable from the battery so there is no danger of harming the electrical system. Remove both the negative battery cables and the drive belt from the generator on both batteries. Don't remove the generator to engine mounting bolt, only loosen it, remove the top generator mounting bolt and then the bottom one. Loosen the nut at the generator's rear that holds the B+ terminal and then disconnect the end by unscrewing the red plastic connector. Then, pull on the generator connector at the back of the machine and open the tab to let go of the wiring before removing the generator from your vehicle. Install the generator by locating the ends of the field wires and the ground wire, then snap the larger wire at the rear of the generator into place. Connect the B+ terminal eyelet to the generator stud, then add the mounting nut and fasten it to 12 Nm (108 in. lbs.). Apply the mounting fasteners to the generator and then tighten both bolts to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.). Never put a screwdriver against the pulley rim and a belt to prevent the belt from tearing. Rout the serpentine accessory drive belt correctly so the water pump does not spin in the wrong way which might lead to engine overheating. Lastly, fit the generator drive belt and once more attach the black battery cables to both batteries.
