2002 Dodge Ram 3500 Crankshaft Seal Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Crankshaft Seal on 2002 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: If replacing or servicing the crankshaft main bearing seal, first remove the transmission and transfer case if it is fitted, the clutch cover and disc for manual cars and then disconnect the battery negative cables. Afterward, detach the flywheel or converter drive plate. Line up your screws so they go into the rear seal in positions 180 degrees apart, then screw #10 sheet metal screws into the seal, make sure your drill does not touch the crankshaft and use a slide hammer to remove the seal. It's important to remove any oil from the seal lip and crankshaft surface before installation, since both should be clean and dry. Rub a soap and water solution on the outside circles of the seal to help with easy assembly. Use a suitable solvent to wash the crankshaft journal after which you must dry it with a fresh shop towel or compressed air. Wipe the inside bore of the crankshaft seal retainer at the same time. Check the crankshaft journal for imperfections or gouges; if the seal groove is deep, use a new seal pushed 1/8" further into the retainer bore or fit the crankshaft wear sleeve which you can pick up from the aftermarket. Apply the seal pilot given with the kit onto the crankshaft and fit the seal over the pilot by hand using the alignment/installation tool as a guide. Tap the alignment tool on all 12 o'clock, 3 o'clock, 6 o'clock and 9 o'clock places with a ball peen hammer until it hits the retainer, then take off the seal pilot. After that, install the flywheel or converter drive plate, attach the bolts and tighten them to 137 Nm (101 ft. lbs.), if the drivetrain includes a clutch cover and disc, secure it as well and finally set it in the transmission and securing it in the transfer case if equip. Set the vehicle on the ground, join the battery negative cables, check and adjust the engine oil level and after that start the engine to look for leaks.
