2002 Dodge Ram 3500 Drive Belt Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Drive Belt on 2002 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: Automatic belt tensioner systems should be checked only after the drive belt is serviced or repaired. The schematics guide you with the latest routing; if there are any differences between that and what's on the label in the engine compartment, use the label as your guide. All belt configurations on diesel engines, with or without air conditioning, are fitted with an automatic spring-loaded belt tensioner. Attach a 3/8 inch ratchet with a suitable handle to the square hole in the automatic belt tensioner, then turn the assembly counterclockwise until you feel tension leaving the belt. Pull the belt off the water pump pulley first and afterward remove the belt from your car. Check while installing that the accessory drive belt is in the proper place to avoid an overheated engine caused by wrong water pump rotation. Set the belt length correctly and place the drive belt over all pulleys, other than the water pump pulley. Put a 3/8 inch ratchet onto the tensioner, turn it counterclockwise and put the new belt over the water pump pulley. Move the tensioner back into its rightful place after the ratchet is removed and confirm all of the belt's pulleys have it securely.
